Curaçao
Dutch Caribbean · Outside the hurricane belt · Cas Abao & Klein Curaçao

Water Clarity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — warm, impossibly clear, calm (sheltered from Atlantic swells). Coral reefs accessible directly from shore. Curaçao is regarded as one of the top shore-diving destinations on the planet.
Walkability to Food

Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago · Outside the hurricane belt · Pigeon Point Beach
No hurricane risk ✓ Pristine Reef Uncrowded
The Beach Pigeon Point Heritage Beach — the quintessential Caribbean postcard: a long sandy spit extending into brilliant turquoise water, thatched-roof huts, gentle calm waves. Englishman's Bay is equally stunning and far more secluded — one of the most photogenic beaches in the entire Caribbean.
Water Clarity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Tobago sits at 11°N with warm, clear Caribbean water. Buccoo Reef (accessible by glass-bottom boat tour) and the offshore reefs have outstanding visibility and abundant marine life including manta rays.
Walkability to Food
Crown Point area has a good cluster of local restaurants, beach bars, and seafood spots within easy walking distance of the main beaches. Scarborough (20 min drive) has a lively market and more dining options.
How Touristy? Refreshingly low-key. Tobago gets far fewer international tourists than most Caribbean islands — it's popular with Trinidadians on weekends, but the beaches are rarely packed. No mega-resorts, no cruise ship hordes. Very genuine Caribbean atmosphere.
Getting There CHS → TAB (A.N.R. Robinson International) via MIA → POS (Port of Spain)

Los Roques, Venezuela
Venezuelan Archipelago · Outside the hurricane belt · The Caribbean's best-kept secret
No hurricane risk ✓ Most Pristine Water Charter access only
The Beaches Arguably the most jaw-dropping water in the entire Caribbean. Francisquí, Crasquí, and Madrisquí are uninhabited cays surrounded by water so brilliantly turquoise it looks digitally enhanced. Shallow sandbars extend hundreds of feet — wade into crystal water up to your knees for 50 meters. Zero crowds.
Water Clarity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — consistently cited as some of the clearest, most turquoise water in the entire Caribbean. Visibility 60+ ft, warm (~84°F), teeming with marine life. The tidal flats and sandbars are unique in the Caribbean.
Walkability to Food
You stay in Gran Roque village (the only inhabited island), a charming no-cars fishing village with colorful posadas (guesthouses), local restaurants, and seafood. Meals are typically included in posada packages. Days are spent on uninhabited cays — usually by boat with your posada.
How Touristy? Very low. The archipelago is a national park — no large hotels, no resorts, no chain restaurants. Only ~40 posadas (small guesthouses, 4–12 rooms) exist. Daily visitor numbers are capped. You share a cay with at most a handful of other travelers — or nobody at all.
Getting There CHS → MIA → CCS (Caracas) → LRV (Los Roques)
AA to Caracas, then charter (~35 min) to Gran Roque
⚠️ US State Dept: Level 3 – Reconsider Travel for Venezuela.
Los Roques itself is safe and regularly visited; transit through CCS is brief but requires planning.
Accommodation Posadas (boutique guesthouses) are the only option — typically 4–12 rooms, meals often included, boats to uninhabited cays arranged daily. Prices are all-in. Budget posadas $150–200/night, luxury eco-posadas $280–380/night. Book well in advance.
August Weather Outside the hurricane belt at 11°N. Hot and sunny (~88°F). Brief afternoon squalls are common but mornings are almost always clear. Calm, clear water with consistent trade winds. Statistically one of the safest Caribbean destinations for August weather.
Wildcard Perk This is the destination people who've been everywhere go when they want to be amazed. The sandbank "cayo" experience — wading on a white sand bar in the middle of a turquoise lagoon with nobody around — is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Kitesurfing conditions are world-class.

San Andrés, Colombia
Colombian Caribbean · Outside the hurricane belt · Sea of Seven Colors
No hurricane risk ✓ Sea of Seven Colors Walkable island
The Water San Andrés is famous for its "Sea of Seven Colors" — the unique combination of reef depth, sand, and seagrass creates an almost unreal gradient of turquoise shades visible from both sea and the island's hillsides. Johnny Cay (a tiny uninhabited island 15 min by boat) has perfectly calm, clear water and white sand.
Water Clarity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — warm, brilliant turquoise, very clear. The island sits atop a coral barrier reef. Snorkeling at El Cove, Morgan's Cave, and around Johnny Cay is excellent. Calm water on the western (leeward) side.
Walkability to Food
The town center (El Centro) is very walkable with great seafood restaurants, local beach bars, and the famous crab-and-coconut local cuisine. The island is only 12km long — you can bicycle or rent a golf cart to get everywhere in 20 min.
How Touristy? Popular with Colombians (it's a free-trade zone — duty-free shopping), but largely off the international radar. You'll hear a lot of Spanish, experience genuine Caribbean Raizal culture, and feel none of the US-tourist-resort vibe. Very authentic, very relaxed.
Getting There CHS → ADZ (Gustavo Rojas Pinilla Airport) via MIA → BOG (Bogotá)
American + Avianca or LATAM · ~7–8h total
US citizens need passport; Colombia entry is visa-free
Accommodation Excellent value for quality. The island has a range of boutique hotels and Airbnbs — sea-view rooms near the beach for $100–180/night, luxury ocean-view villas with pools for $220–330/night. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of experience.
August Weather Outside the hurricane belt at 12°N. Warm (~87°F), some tropical showers but reliable sunny periods. Trade winds provide natural cooling. Statistically very safe from hurricanes — one of Colombia's most visited August destinations.
Wildcard Perk San Andrés has a unique Caribbean-Colombian-Raizal culture unlike anywhere else — the local music (vallenato mixed with calypso), seafood (whole crab in coconut sauce), and the golf cart sunset loop around the island are experiences you won't find in any other Caribbean destination. Also: duty-free rum.
